Montgomeryshire Status

Records from 1998 (Lake Vyrnwy) and 2012 (Llanymynech Rocks). This day flying species is probably under recorded, flying as it does, around the tops of birch trees in March/April.

Wingspan :  M & F, 35-39mm.

Light Orange Underwing.

Habitat

Open woodland, scrub and other open ground.

Foodplant

Downy birch and silver birch.

Lifestage data

Eggs are laid on twigs in time for the larvae to feed on the opening catkins, then feeding on younger leaves when larger, hiding between spun leaves during the day. Larva April-June. Overwinters as a pupa.
