Wingspan :  M & F, 28-36mm.

Confusion species

Dark Chestnut, Red-headed Chestnut.
Flight time (Montgomeryshire)

Habitat

Mostly in broadleaf woodland, but also found in scrub, hedgerows and gardens.

Foodplant

Oak, elm, birch, hawthorn, blackthorn and docks.

Lifestage data

Overwinters as adult, becoming active in milder periods. Larva late April-June, feed at night. Pupates in  loose earthen cocoon underground.
