Resident. Widely distributed but not a particularly common species.

Montgomeryshire Status

First recorded in 2011 in the west of the county at Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve.

Wingspan :   M & F, 4-5mm.

Confusion species


Many species of Stigmella are very similar. One of the best ways of separating them is to examine the type of leaf-mine.




Flight time & Voltinity (Bivoltine.)

Habitat

Wherever the foodplant is found.

Foodplant

Smooth leaved willows.

Lifestage data

Leaf miner. Eggs laid on either side of leaf. Larva forms a narrow gallery which may be parallel to the mid rib and may be contorted, this finally extends into a small blotch. Pupates in a dark reddish brown cocoon.
