UK Status

Resident. A locally common species in the southern half of Britain. This is only the second record for north Wales.

Montgomeryshire Status

First recorded in 2012 at Llanfyllin in the north of the county.

Wingspan :   M & F 10-15mm.

Confusion species

Care should be taken as other species of Coleophora can look very similar.
Flight time & Voltinity (Univoltine)

Habitat

Heathland and rides of birch woods.

Foodplant

Birch.

Lifestage data

Leaf miner. Eggs laid on underside of leaf. Larva makes short mine then forms case from which it makes blotch mines from beneath the leaf. After over- wintering it grazes underside of leaf. Pupates in case attached to top of leaf.
