Resident. Widely distributed and generally common throughout the British Isles as far north as Sutherland.

A fairly common species throughout the county.

Wingspan :   M & F, 15-23mm.

Confusion species

E. hohenwartiana.
Flight time & Voltinity (Univoltine)

Habitat

Chalk downs, meadows and waysides.

Foodplant

Black knapweed and thistle spp.

Lifestage data

Flower/seed feeder. Eggs laid on foodplant. Larva lives in flowerheads and seedheads feeding on developing seeds and pith. Pupates in a silken cocoon amongst leaf litter or in the soil.
